How to Check Whether an iPhone Is Carrier Locked

Learn where to check carrier restrictions, why they differ from Activation Lock and what to include in a buyback quote request.

Updated

Check the Carrier Lock field

Open Settings → General → About. If “No SIM restrictions” appears beside Carrier Lock, the iPhone is generally carrier-unlocked. If you see a restriction or the information is unclear, ask the carrier that supplied the phone.

Only the carrier can unlock a carrier restriction

Apple does not remove carrier locks. Eligibility can depend on a carrier's terms, financing and account status. Do not rely on a paid third party promising to bypass restrictions, and do not disclose account credentials to a buyer.

Do not confuse carrier lock with Find My

An unlocked carrier status does not remove Apple Activation Lock, settle financing or verify lawful ownership. Report each issue separately. An iPhone can be carrier-unlocked while still associated with the previous owner's Apple Account.

Include an honest status in the form

If you cannot verify the carrier, select or state “not sure” instead of guessing. Name the carrier if known and explain any remaining obligation before agreeing to a sale.
